Der idyllische Naturpark Sunset Cliffs ist einer meiner Lieblingsorte in San Diego und einen Sonnenuntergang hier zu genießen steht bei einem Besuch auf jeden Fall auf dem Pflichtprogramm! Die Sunset Cliffs liegen südlich vom Ocean Beach und der Name ist etwas irreführend, denn es handelt sich hier nicht wirklich um einen Strand, sondern vielmehr schroffe Klippen mit umliegenden Wanderwegen rund ums Kliff. Mit etwas Vorsicht könnt ihr hier über die Felsen klettern, die Flutmulden (tide pools) und Wanderwege erkunden, den Surfer*innen zuschauen und es euch bei einem romantischen Picknick am Pazifik genütlich machen. Parken ist hier ürbigens kostenlos.

Als ob es in San Diego selbst nicht schon genug schöne Strände gibt, toppt der breite Sandstrand auf Coronado Island nochmal alles: 2012 wurde er zum besten Strand in ganz Amerika gewählt, und somit Coronado Beach für alle Strandliebhaber ein absolutes Muss! Der Trip auf die Insel fühlt sich immer an wie ein Sommerabenteuer aus dem Bilderbuch: Über die prunkvolle Coronado Bridge erreicht ihr die Halbinsel und macht erstmal in der Innenstadt halt, shlendert durch die Gegend und lasst euch vom entspannten Beach-Vibe anstecken, bevor es dann am Nachmittag zum Strand geht. Surfer beobachten, schwimmen gehen, den Sonnenuntergang am endlosen Horizont bewundern und sogar Lagerfeuer sind hier erlaubt – was will man mehr!

Auf der Suche nach den besten Restaurants in San Diego und einem pulsierenden Nachtleben, führt kein Weg am historischen Gaslamp Quarter, welches im Herzen von Downtown liegt. Hier reiht sich ein Szenerestaurant, Hipster Café oder lokale Brauerei an coole Kunstgallerien und Antikgeschäfte.

Bei dieser schönen Kajaktour könnt ihr jedoch (mit ein bisschen Glück) eine Vielzahl an Fischen, Vögeln, Delfinen, Schildkröten, Seelöwen und Walen beobachten, während ihr entspannt durch das Wasser paddelt. Ich erinnere mich noch gut daran, als ich mich wie ein kleines Kind gefreut habe, als ich die orangefarbenen Garibaldi Fische, die sich zwischen dem grünen Seegras getummelt haben, entdeckt habe. Travel to San Diego
San Diego is beautifully situated on a harbor basin in southwestern California near the border with Mexico on the Pacific Ocean. To the east, the city is framed by picturesque mountains as well as the Anza-Borrego Desert Park. If San Diego is a stopover on your USA road trip, you can reach the city in about two and a half hours by car from Los Angeles.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is located just under 6 kilometers northwest of downtown San Diego. You will probably have to change planes at another U.S. airport, such as Los Angeles or Chicaco, and then fly on to San Diego. However, there are many connections with major airlines such as United Airlines, American Airlines, Lufthansa and Delta, so this should not be a problem.
Once you arrive at San Diego Airport, take a cab or Uber to downtown for about $20 USD, or take bus 992, which leaves every 10 minutes for downtown/downtown. The ride takes half an hour and you pay 2.25 USD.
Climate & Best Time to Visit San Diego
San Diego likes to call itself “America’s Finest City” and that’s mainly because of the weather, which really leaves nothing to be desired: it’s sunny here all year round. The warmest months of the year are July to October, when the average temperature is 25 degrees – perfect for enjoying the city’s many paradisiacal beaches. The Pacific Ocean also warms up considerably in summer, so that the water temperature at the end of August is around 21 degrees and invites you to refresh yourself, and of course water sports typical for San Diego.
Even between November and April, temperatures in San Diego are still around 19 degrees. In general, you can always expect sunshine in the city near the Mexican border (we can only dream of 300 sunny days a year), rain and storms are comparatively rare.
So you see, San Diego is a year-round destination as far as the weather is concerned, so I would highly recommend you to avoid the summer months, especially June, July and August, because then it is just too expensive and too crowded. Rather spend April or May, or September and October in the California big city and enjoy the beaches without tourist crowds.
On the road in San Diego
San Diego is easy and inexpensive to explore on foot and by public transportation: There are two different operators for public transportation, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) for buses and the San Diego Trolley for a kind of suburban train.
Most of the city’s attractions are located within a fairly small radius, so for you especially the MTS buses are convenient. During the day, most buses run every 15 minutes and a single ride costs around 2.25USD. Day tickets for only $5 per person are also well worth it, as they pay for themselves from as little as three trips a day. All information on travel times and the route network can be found on the MTS website, and Google Maps is also always available for orientation.
If you are more into comfort, you can of course also use a rental car or cab, or the more common provider in the U.S. Uber, comfortable and uncomplicated on the road. However, parking fees can be quite high in California, so I always advise you to look for parking spaces in the side streets.
And now comes my favorite means of transportation: The
Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
! It takes you all over the city and stops at all the best sights of the city, so you can hop on and off as you please. Also make yourself comfortable on the sun deck of the bus and listen to the audio guide to learn more about the sights of the city!
How many days should I stay in San Diego?
I think 3 days in San Diego is perfect! You’ll have plenty of time to explore the must-do activities, but you’ll also have time to experience the laid-back lifestyle typical of California, soak up the sun on the beach, and experience art, cuisine and culture. If you really only want to see the best sights, one or two days will probably be enough.
Food & Drink in San Diego
San Diego has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, and I find it particularly exciting that the multicultural atmosphere of the big city is also reflected in food and drink. No matter which part of town you’re in – La Jolla, the Pacific Beach Promenade, Little Italy or downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter – there’s something to enjoy on every corner.
For a particularly nice atmosphere or a romantic dinner in togetherness, I recommend the restaurants at Shelter Island Harbor, where you can dine wonderfully and then stroll past the yachts and listen to the live music.
Mexican at its best
Because of its proximity to Mexico, San Diego has incredibly good Mexican food. Our favorites definitely include these two:
You’ll find the restaurants centrally located in Downtown. Mexican for a quick bite is offered by Baja Fresh Restaurants, a restaurant chain that makes excellent tacos, nachos and the like and has several locations in the city.
To get the most out of San Diego’s Mexican culture, I highly recommend this beautiful tour that not only lets you explore the best Mexican restaurants with all your senses, but also learn more about the birthplace of California – including a visit to Whaley House, America’s most famous haunted house!
La Dolce Vita in San Diego
If you’re more into pizza and pasta, you’re in good hands in the Little Italy district, where Mediterranean cuisine is everywhere. This district is also worth a walk, because the atmosphere and architecture is quite different from the rest of San Diego. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning there is a Farmers Market in Little Italy where all kinds of art, fruits & vegetables, souvenirs and cosmetics are sold in a lively atmosphere. The best pizza in San Diego is at Ilosa Pizza Bar and Bencotto offers delicious pasta in a cozy atmosphere.
If you can’t decide, head to the Little Italy Food Hall, where you can feast on Italian cuisine. Here you can find information about current events and exhibitions in Little Italy.
Craft beer
Did you know that San Diego is considered the Craft Brew Capital of America? San Diego hosts many beer-related events, such as San Diego Beer Week and the San Diego International Beer Competition. Even I, as a wine lover, love to taste the various IPA’s, which in San Diego typically have a pretty high alcohol content (8-10%).

If you are ever in the USA, a juicy burger and a large portion of fries is of course a must and San Diego leaves nothing to be desired:

Shopping in San Diego
Known as “America’s Finest City,” San Diego is constantly in vacation mode, and in addition to dream beaches and delicious restaurants, shopping is part of the fun: Centrally located in the Mission Valley neighborhood, the
Fashion Valley
is a true shopper’s paradise, where you’ll find more than 200 restaurants and stores on two floors, including JC Penny, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and even Tiffany’s.
The La Jolla beachfront shopping district is considered the Rodeo Drive of San Diego. Overlooking the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean, La Jolla is filled with art galleries, antique stores, boutiques, and vintage and specialty stores. Be sure to stop by the cute family-run bookstore Warwick’s, too.
Believe it or not, the Ocean Beach Antique District is the largest antique shopping district in the entire country! Located in the multicultural coastal community of Ocean Beach, the shopping district features more than 200 antique dealers and stores, and you can easily spend an entire day browsing vintage jewelry and home accessories here. Top it off with a visit to one of the cute microbreweries or restaurants, or visit an authentic winery in the heart of the neighborhood.

A trip to San Diego is not necessarily considered a bargain, however, I reveal to you and the best money saving tips and free attractions in the California city. Especially if you don’t want to miss any of the cool sights in San Diego, sightseeing passes are worthwhile and can save you up to 50% off the original admission price at attractions – so watch out: The San Diego Go City All-Inclusive Pass gives you free admission to the 55 best spots in the city for the number of days you choose; whether it’s theme parks, zoos, snorkeling adventures, museums, or harbor tours – everyone will find something! You buy the pass and then you don’t have to worry about anything, because you get an individual QR code and the city guide. Apart from saving up to 55% on ticket prices, you don’t have to worry about tickets anymore!
Alternatively, there is the San Diego Go City Explorer Pass, which includes fewer attractions, but is a bit cheaper. Here you buy the pass not for specific days, but for the number of sights you want to visit. Also with this pass, you can really let loose with the many adventures in San Diego: Museums, zoos, city tours, boat rides, hiking tours, whale watching, and and and.
There are also many free entertainment options in San Dego: Visit Balboa Park on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. for a fantastic free organ concert, as the park is home to the Organ Pavilion with one of the largest outdoor pipe organs in the world! So, pack a picnic and get there!
There’s always something going on at the Embarcadero Promenade proper, too, from street musicians to street performances and margiers. There’s always a lively atmosphere as you stroll along this expansive waterfront, and aside from that, you’ll enjoy great water views – if you stroll south along the water, you’ll have a beautiful view of the endless Coronado Bridge!
For fans of bird watching, San Diego is known for its many wetland preserves: Tijuana Estuary and Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge are among the best destinations for viewing hundreds of bird species.

Besonders beliebt ist der Mission Beach bei Surfanfängern, die sich hier an den freundlichen Wellen, flach abfallenden Wasser und vielen Surfschulen erfreuen. Für Abwechslung sorgt der Belmont Park mit Achterbahnen und Karussells ganz in der Nähe, wo es ürbigens auch kostenlose Parkplätze gibt.

Der Pacific Beach liegt zwischen Mission Beach und La Jolla und ist ideal für lange Spaziergänge und Familienaktivitäten. Wegen der endlosen Weite und den vielen Leihgeschäften am Strand, in denen es Ausrüstung zum Tauchen gibt, zieht dieser Strandabschnitt täglich Menschenmassen an. Nach dem Schnorcheln und Sonnenbaden könnt ihr euch mit einem kühlen Getränk in den kleinen Strandbars belohnen. Rettungsschwimmer sorgen täglich für eure Sicherheit.

Es gibt für mich nichts besseres als ein langen Strandspaziergang in der Sonne und am Ocean Beach wird es noch besser, denn am tierfreundlichen Ocean Beach toben von morgens bis abends Hunde im Wasser! Neben den vierbeinigen Freunden fühlen sich hier besonders junge Leute wohl, denn bunte Hostels und coole Bars laden zu unvergessliche Partynächten am Strand ein. Auch Yoga und Surfen gehören hier zum Alltag und sorgen für eine lockere Atmosphäre.

Windansea Beach

Wer die Surfprofis der Region bewundern möchte und anschließend die eigene Karriere als Surfer*in planen möchte weil es so einfach aussieht, der ist am Windansea Beach bestens aufgehoben! Hier prallen die Wellen mit voller Wucht an die Küste; vom Schwimmen wird daher abgeraten. Mit ganz viel Glück könnt ihr hier bei eurem Strandspaziergang von den Klippen sogar Wale beobachten.
San Diego hotels
There is certainly no shortage of nice accommodations in San Diego, whether AirBnB or hotel, everyone will find something here! Even though I usually like to stay in AirBnB’s on my travels, it was important for me to stay centrally in San Diego, so that I can enjoy the lively city to the fullest – we had chosen a hotel downtown. With its central location, you can’t go wrong with a downtown accommodation.
Then there’s Old Town; the birthplace of the state of California, so to speak, because it was the site of the first Spanish settlement in the early 19th century. Even today, much of the historic charm and architecture has been preserved.
If the city center is too hectic for you, you can stay in North Park, one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city, which is known for its relaxed atmosphere and street art scene. Especially if you don’t want to give up your Flat White from the hipster café next door, this district is just right for you.
